Barkerville, main street, after the fire of September 16, 1868. Governor Musgrave's visit of 1869. Chinese archway set up for Musgrave's visit. Close-up photograph highlights Brewery sign. Black man in the front left below the B in BREWERY, standing, two Chinese men on left, white man in centre under archway. Several other people in the background. Chinese characters on sign could not be identified, as they are too blurry. - Note - later translator has identified four characters, two on each sign board. Left: 子若 Right: 民保 These characters are listed in the traditional way. They should be read from right to lift. They together means "Protect the People the right board) Like Protecting Your Own Children (the left board)".
