Scope and content

An "Ehr-hu" or Chinese fiddle with two strings that are tuned a fifth apart. The stem is wood and connects two pegs with a short section of bamboo open on one end and closed at the other with tightly-stretched snake skin. Two strings of gut stretch from the body to the two pegs. Two loops hold the strings in towards the body along the neck length. This is usually called the "gold horse" because it is generally made of horse hair, but in this case is made of gut. This type of instrument does not have a bridge. It is played with a bow which is generally attached to the strings so that it will not be separated from the instrument. In this case there is no bow present.
