Scope and content

This three-stringed instrument has a long, thin, wooden neck curved like a cello, the head being scroll-like. Three hexagonal pegs fit into the head to hold the strings made of gut. On the neck, near to the head, a bridge made of bone is held by more gut; this is also called the "gold horse". The body, a flat rounded but roughly rectangular shape, is made of wood open at both ends but covered with snake skin. Metal bands hold the snakeskin in place. The strings are attached to the body with a bone "toggle" and wire clips.
