Scope and content

The body of the flute is made up of a single piece of cylindrical wood that is long and hollow through its center. The piece of wood has been painted black and there is a shiny finish on the paint. Drilled at different intervals done the front of the flute are small circular holes, two near the top, six just above the middle, and two more nearer to the bottom. Attached at the top of the flute is a thick disk of ivory which is presumably the mouth piece for the flute. Near the bottom of the instrument there is a delicate floral design painted with some Chinese lettering above and below it. The flowers are yellow with red centers and green leaves while the lettering is white and gold in color. The very bottom end of the flute is slightly thinner than the rest of the flute and is exposed plain wood. On the backside of the flute two holes have been drilled through which a pink tassel has been ties. The tassel is connected to a long string which has a knot design, two gold colored beads, and a metal medallion hanging on it. The top of the tassel is tied tight with gold colored thread before the long pink strings hang loose down the side of the object.
