General note

Accompanying instruction booklet is listed as 1988.003.001. According to the source this mah jongg game was a gift to her mother, Maude Elizabeth (Mrs. Joseph) Banks, from the Chinese foreman (Ah Cooey ?) at Hulbert Hop Yards. She thinks it might have been brought from China before 1920. Mrs. Banks was born in 1883 and died in 1953. Other research suggests that Mah Jongg became popular in the west in the early 1920s, after it was introduced by an American businessman and traveller in China, Joseph P. Babcock. He devised a set of rules for occidental play, added Arabic numerals to the tiles and in 1920 began to import sets under the trademark, "Mah Jongg". It became a craze until 1926. Maude Elizabeth Banks passed away in Chilliwack July 16, 1953, at the age of 69 years. Her obituary was published in the Chilliwack Progress July 22, 1953 and appears on page 5 [part of which is recorded below]. "Mrs. Maude Elizabeth Ford Banks a resident of the Chilliwack district for 58 years died in hospital here Thursday after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Banks, wife of Joseph Banks, 209 Maple avenue, was for many years an active member of St. Thomas Anglican church and was a past president of the Women's Auxiliary. Born in Michigan, the former Maude Elizabeth Bremner moved to Alberta in 1893 with her family and two years later came to Sardis to make her home with her aunt, Mrs. Lickman. She married Joseph Banks, then manager of the Hulbert Hop Yards in November 1903. One of the original members of the Chilliwack Valley Horticultural Society, she was an active worker with the Floral section of the Fair Board for many years. She had also been a member of the Sara Wells, IODE chapter during the first World War."
