Local provenance. Found by Ed. Lee & Bill Spowart in basement of house in Chinatown after the 1960 fire tucked behind a beam. 2 marks. The larger one reads, モLi-yuanヤ (=Lai Yuan) which is an early high-quality brand supposedly imported from HK, commonly found in North America. See http://www.cinarc.org/Opium.html#anchor_89 The smaller one reads, モLin-jiヤ (=Lam Kee, a later Macao opium refiner-exporter). See http://www.cinarc.org/Opium-2.html#anchor 255 The box probably came from Macao, and may represent the transition from the period when opium was legal (before 1908-9) and when it became illegal, allowing new refiner-exporters to enter the market.
