Abacus

This object has a rectangular dark brown wooden frame that is open in the center except for one bar which runs lengthwise across the frame just below the center. Drilled into the inner part of the frame are small holes into which are inserted cream/yellow colored cylindrical sticks except for in two spaces in which are inserted metal rod. On the top half of the frame the sticks hold five circular dark brown wooden beads. On the bottom half of the frame under the lengthwise bar the sticks hold two circular brown wooden per stick. Wrapped around the corners of the frame and on the front of the parallel bar there are flat metal sheets attached to the wood which are silver in color. On the back of the abacus there are also two flat wooden bars that run horizontally down the back of the counter giving the structure support. All the wood of the object has an oily type finish on it.

This object is a pair of Chinese dancing accessories made of fabric with wooden handles. The handles of the object are long a cylindrical with a ridged pattern near the top and a more circular bottom. Near the bottom a hole has been drilled through the wood presumably for strings to be tied through for the object to be held on the wrists. Attached to the top of the handles are cardboard petals which make up the main body of the object. There are five petals in total attached to a circular base and are tied with strings midway up the object. Around the circular base there are some frilly pieces of colorful fabric attached. These petals are made of a thick cardboard which I blue on the inside and covered in fabric on the outside. The bottoms of these petals are green silk with a brown embroidered swirl pattern on the edges. The tops of the petals are a hot pink color made with a silk fabric and with colorful threaded embroidered designs on the fabric. The tips of the petals also have threaded brown edging. Coming out of the middle of the petals are piece of light pink and yellow silk fabric which are frayed on the edges presumably from the dancing.

Apron from Dai kow General's Costume. Apron is pale green with steel blue, pink, purple, green and gold floral sequin pattern. Pattern is accented with glass tube beads, in same colours.Attached to bottom of Apron are lace tassels. Tassels are silk with blue and red pattern around gold painted plastic beads. Apron is lined with white silk and is fastened with ties at the waistband.

Three panelled apron from Dai kow General's Costume. Apron is pale green with steel blue, pink, purple, green, gold foral sequin pattern. Pattern is accented with glass tube beads, in same colour. Attached to bottom of apron are lace tassels. Tassels are silk with blue and red pattern around purple glass beads. Apron is lined with white silk and fastened with ties at the waistband.

Ivory carving puzzle ball with a four part ivory stand. E-988-018-015a Ivory puzzle ball with at least eight layers of carving. The outermost layer is carved with a raised floral motif; the inner layers are carved with lattice work like geometric designs. E-988-018-015b Four part, ivory puzzle ball stand. The stand consists of a circular base, two vertical pillars and a small bowl. The base is carved in relief; the top is carved with a geometrical design, the sides and bottom edge are carved into jagged points. At the centre of the base is a rotating platform. The pillar screws into the platform. The first pillar is carved in the round in the image of Monk holding a lotus in his right hand. This section screws into the platform. The second pillar is carved into a spindle with a rotating circular piece (prayer wheel), which is carved with geometrical designs. The bottom end of the spindle screws into the top of the Monk's head. The top part of the spindle screws into the bowl. The last part of the stand consists of a small dish or bowl for the puzzle ball to rest in.

Banjo

The body of the banjo is shaped like a circular flower that has six slightly curved petals. The edge of the body is an orange colored wood which has a glossy finish. The top and bottom of the body of the banjo are made of two unfinished wood panels that sit slightly below the edge of the body. On the front and back stamped with black ink on the wood that says "Ching Won Musical Society, Vancouver B.C" with some Chinese characters in the middle of the circle. Attached near the end of the body of the banjo is a rectangular piece of wood with two curved corners that has a painting of a carp on it. This piece of wood has three holes drilled into it in which the strings of the instrument are tied. The neck of the instrument is made of a long rectangular piece of wood which is flat on the top side and rounded on the bottom. This piece is the same color and finish as the edges of the body. Running across this neck starting with short spacing but then getting wider are piece of ivory with brass sticking across the top. There are twelve of these piece and they make up the frets of the banjo. At the top of the instrument the neck curves slightly downward before creating a type of hook at the top. In the curved part there are inserted three handles which has rounded ends and curves running down there length. Attached to these handles are the other ends of the three strings and by twisting the handles the strings can be tightened or loosened. Two of the strings are a clear plastic while one is a light blue color and they lie down the neck of the instrument. Attached on the hooked end of the banjo is a circular carving in the wood. The carving has vines and flowers running around the outside of the circle. In the center of this circle there is a piece of wood that has been painted a cream color and has a depiction of what seems to be a house with the sun rising behind it. The very top of the instrument has two small dips in the end.

The body of the banjo is shaped like a circular flower that has six slightly curved petals. The edges of the body have been stained with a dark brown finish giving the edges a glossy look. The top and bottom of the body of the banjo are made of two unfinished wood panels which are a light brown color. Attached near the end of the body of the banjo is a semi circle piece of wood which is hollow in the center. This piece of wood has three holes drilled into it in which the strings of the instrument are tied. The neck of the instrument is made of a long rectangular piece of wood which is flat on the top side and rounded on the bottom. This piece is the same color and finish as the edges of the body. Running across this neck starting with short spacing but then getting wider are triangular thin raised piece of wood. There are twelve of these piece and they make up the frets of the banjo. At the top of the instrument the neck curves slightly downward before curving up sharply. In the curved part there are inserted three handles which has rounded ends and curves running down there length. These handles are made of a light yellow colored wood and have a glossy finish also. Attached to these handles are the other ends of the three strings and by twisting the handles the strings can be tightened or loosened. All the strings are clear plastic and they lie down the neck of the instrument. Attached on the upward curve of the banjo is a piece of carved wood which is shaped like a flower. The carving has leaves and flowers running around the outside of the circle. In the center of this circle there is the carving of a flower with lines scored in the wood around it.

The main body of this object is made of interwoven pieces of wicker which create a circular basket with a flat bottom. Around the edges and the base of the object are thin rectangular pieces of wood which create a support system for the wicker of the basket. These pieces are a light brown/yellow in color as is the wicker. The top of the basket has a ring of slightly thicker wicker wound together and held in place and equal intervals by two pieces looping through the main body. Attached on opposite sides of the basket are two rings of jade which create the handles of the basket. These pieces of jade are light green in color and are held in place by three loops of string which secure them to the sides of the basket. On the adjacent sides to the handles are some string decorations on the basket. These decorations two piece of string each with three colorful beads attached to the bottom. At the top of the string are a single bead and a Chinese coin. The string is looped through the side of the basket holding it in place.

This object is a short and stout cylindrical basket with a removable circular lid. The basket is made of interwoven plant fibers. The container part of the basket has a light yellow and brown checkered pattern because of the two different colors of fiber used and how they are woven together. The bottom of the container is the solid light yellow color with some thread around the outside holding the main weaving around the basket in place. Inside the container is lined with a cream colored cloth fabric. The main body is presumably a cardboard with the woven and cloth coverings. The lid of the container is identical to the body with the outside being the light yellow and brown woven plant fibers and the underside being the cream colored cloth. Around the edge of the lid there is a brown fiber lip sewn into place. A small red label on the underside of the lid has some Chinese characters on it in white and then in black writing reds "Made in The People's Republic of China."

This object is a cloth bet with decorative embroidery on the front. The main piece of the belt is a thick piece of fabric that which is light brown colored on the back and covered in embroidery on the front. The top of this piece of fabric is flat with two squared ends and a curved bottom that dips in the center. Attached to the straight top are two almost semi circle flaps which open up revealing that the belt has space inside of it much like a fanny pack. The flaps have bright colored embroidery and two cord fiber loops that hook over circular metal buttons. These buttons have Chinese lettering on them and are silver. The main colors of the fabric on the front of the belt are pink and teal with white and blue outlines. The embroidery is a wide range of bright colors and is sewn like a dragon a phoenix surrounded by plants. Off either end of this pouch are two long light blue colored straps that presumably wrap around the waist. There straps are made of a light silky fabric and are a little bit creased and dirty.

The main body of this object is a circular piece of wood which is presumably part of small tree stump or branch. The top and bottom of the wood are flat and the curved edges are smooth besides a few dents and scratches. There is a notch that was made in one side of the tree stump that connects to a circular hole drilled through the top of the wood to the bottom. In this hole is inserted a cylindrical piece of wood with a slot down the center. In the slot the tip of the chopping tool has been inserted and is held in place by a nail which has been driven through the cylindrical wood and through the tip of the knife. The knife itself has a slightly curved blade which is the length of the wooden base. It is made of metal which looks hand crafted and is quite rusted along its length. A handle attached to the end of the blade is cylindrical in shape and also made of wood which is hand carved and quite smooth. The joint that goes through the tip of the blade allows the knife to move up and down to an almost ninety degree angle. The cylindrical wooden piece also moves slightly up and down to aid in the knife's movement. On the top and bottom surface of the main body of wood some Chinese lettering has been carved. The wood is quite smooth and slippery.

This object is a pair of black silk boots that are used for performances. The boots have rounded toes and also rounded heels. The soles of the shoes are made with an unfinished leather bottom which is sewn onto many layers of thick fiber. On top of the fiber is a thin blue stripe of leather before the silk fabric begins. The boot part of the silk fabric is made of a four distinct pieces two curved pieces make up the toe and two curved pieces make up the heel. There is also two tall piece of fabric sewn up the front and back making up the ankle/calf piece of the boots. There is a small slit at the back of the boots near the top. The interior of the boots is made of a blue silk which is sewn into the interior.

This is a small rectangular shaped bottle with rounded sides and corners. The neck of the bottle is short and cylindrical with a flared ringed lip around the top. The bottle is made of a clear glass and there is some dirt build up within the bottle. On the bottom of the bottle the glass says "S.B.W. Co."

This is a small light weight clear glass bottle. The base of the bottle is cylindrical with a flat bottom and a slightly rounded top before the neck. The neck is a thinner cylinder which is hollow with a ringed lip around the top. The glass has bubbles in it and the object is slightly dirty on the inside.

This is a small light green tinted glass bottle. The bottle is very tiny and rectangular with rounded edges. It has a short cylindrical neck that looks as though the glass has been broken at the top. The inside of the bottle is cylindrical. The glass also contains some small bubbles in it.

This object is a square clear glass bottle with beveled edges. The neck of the bottle is short and cylindrical with a ringed lip on the top. There is some dirt build up in the neck of the bottle. A small piece of thread is tied under the lip of the bottle.

This object is a tall cylindrical bottle that was presumably a liquor bottle containing gin. Bottle has a flat bottom and rounded top with a small neck and ringed lip. The top is opening showing that the bottle itself is hollow. Attached just below that neck on the side of the bottle is a half heart shaped small handle only big enough to fit a finger or two through. Around the neck of the bottle is an metal wrapping which was presumably used as a seal for the bottle at some point. The rest of the bottle is a light speckled brown color with a glossy shiny finish over top. There is a stamp pressed into the side of the bottle which is of some type of unidentifiable animal.

This is a small light green tinted glass bottle. The bottle is very tiny and rectangular with rounded edges. It has a very short cylindrical neck that looks as though the glass has been broken at the top. The inside of the bottle is cylindrical and has some dirty residue. The glass also contains some small bubbles in it.
