A. Case for Scales. Wooden and shaped like a paddle. Overall length 14". B. A Chinese balance scale. The artifact initially consists of a solid tubular shaped component made from bone. It is 30.6 cm. in length, and it has a diameter of 0.5 cm. A total of three sets of black longitudinal and transverse markings have been incised into the artifact. Near one end of the bone component there has been suspended an oval shaped brass weight. This has a height of 2.8 cm., a width of 2.4 cm., and a thickness of 0.3 cm. The weight has been suspended from the bone component by means of a segment of black thread. At the opposing end of the item there has been attached one end of a segment of black thread. This in turn becomes a total of four sections of black thread, and the ends of these are attached to a circular disk shaped brass component. Two other segments of black thread have been attached to the bone component, and their respective lower ends appear to be tied to small pieces of wood. Finally, a modern length of string has been tied to the centre of the bone component, and this has a silver coloured metal eye at its end. Ph1 2006 ; Artifact damaged Jan. 2008. B- Bone segment has been broken into 4 pieces. One pan is missing. The remaining pan is still attached to a bone fragment with 2 strands of thread. The other 2 strands of thread are broken. The weight still has thread through it, but it is no long attached to the bone segment.
