Chinese graveyard markers

Black and white copy photograph showing two large stones in a lawn side by side, each with Chinese writing engraved.

Signatures: "Photo of stones marking site of festivities at Chinese graveyard. Also located at Little Mountain with Chung's parents - the stones were at one time on top of a small hill next to the tree on left, but the hill was levelled and the stones were moved." Written on back of the photograph.

Chung family headstones

Photograph consists of a group portrait at Edenbank farm, Sardis. Standing left to right: Gertrude Wells, Edwin Wells, Ray Wells, Harry Weeds, C.L. Reid, Frank Blackstock, Archie Atkinson, A.C. Wells. Seated left to right: Allen, Ernest Farrow, Mr. Clark, Foo, Frang Twigg, Fred Hussey. Chinese worker Foo, seated in front, was fatally injured at the farm in an attack by a bull named Zad.

Signatures: "Wells, Woods, Reid, Blackstock, Acheson" written on the photograph in pencil. "Edenbank Farm & Men 1899 / Mr. & Mrs. Ed. Wells - left, A.C. Wells - right, Roy Carman, Foo, Clark, Twigg, Hussey, Ernest Farrow" is written on the reverse.

The photograph is published in Oliver Wells' book entitled: "Edenbank: The history of a Canadian pioneer farm" on page 54.

CM 3702b Mah Jongg Racks Long beige box with one corner of the lid being ripped. There are no markings except for tape around the edge at the bottom. The lid lifts off and inside the box are 4 Mah Jongg Racks. The racks are long with a little shelf or ledge and a white chart with the title "Original Score" and the number of doubles. The rack says "Rack Number 100" The racks are black or navy blue and are made of wood. They are all the same. These tile racks were used with the Mah Jongg game donated earlier (1988.003.001).

(C) ends three-sided; Chinese characters etched on one side; two seated women in room on other; between pipe & container holes are two round holes for hollow cylinders (d-e); open grilled bases; thick rims; between two holes, projection for strap, (brown cotton cord) tied on ending with nickel [?] hook; card knotted in many places; slender tweezers (F); nickel (?); painted at ends; butt end with red straw [?] projection; tweezers can rest in pipe bowl or opening.

CM 3702a Mah-Jongg Game Set Wood, brass ?, ivory, bamboo, ink, paper; wood cabinet with front door that slides upwards that reads: "Sparrow Set / Nade [sic] in China; cabinet has five drawers; top four drawers contain 36 ivory and bamboo tiles, each with various numbers and designs; bottom drawer contains four "tiles" with pencilled letters N, S, W, E. [North, South, West, East], and numerous ivory sticks; also 3 small dice, 2 circular pieces, a flower-shaped black piece and two pieces of paper. Tile racks for this game were donated some while later and are catalogued as 1990.054.001
