Scope and content

The mask was brought to Nanaimo in 1937 by a lion dance team from Vancouver. They were in Nanaimo raising money to support the Chinese effort in the Sino-Japanese War. The horn on the lion's head indicates that it was made in southern China. The person wearing the mask could make the mouth open and close, eyes roll and ears twitch. Usually lions are a symbol of power and energy but the white/grey whiskers indicate this lion is older and peaceful.
