Biographical history

Custodial history

Donation; Many Chinese did not cut off their queues prior to 1911 in case they wished to return to China. It was forbidden that they cut their hair under the Manchu dynasty. Nevertheless, many did, to conform to western standards.

Scope and content

Local provenance. Found in the house of Man Sing, which was moved from Bing Kee Street to the ''new'' Chinatown in 1914 by the father of the donor. It was in a tin box hanging from the foundation planks. Has been on display in the Chinatown exhibit for many years.
