Scope and content

A large paperback Chinese almanac written in Chinese except for some pages which have many English words. The pages are bound with thread or string which literally has sewn the pages together. Over the spine and binding a red tape has been applied. The front cover has a picture of an old man leaning on a staff with two children, a reindeer and a bird around him. At the bottom of the book, on the page-ends, is written in felt pen: "1988" and two Chinese characters. The book is read from right to left. The paper is newsprint.

Physical condition

Immediate source of acquisition

From the Sue Lem Bing property on Lewis St. off York St. The buildings on that property were demolished in July of 1991. Most artifacts came from the outlying buildings which were the living quarters for those Chinese who relied on Sue Lem Bing to find work for them. Sue Lem Bing was a work-boss for the lumber companies and lumber mill operators who came to rely on him to find laborers for them.
